Paper/2D printers are largely on their way out, it's a stale industry. I doubt free/libre design can take off there.
It's much like Linux. It took the cloud by storm, smartphones by default, but it came too late to make headway on laptops/desktops. Sure, many people here use it. I do. And about 2% of the Internet with a declining tendency.
